Pre-Congress Excursions

Full day pre-congress excursions are available for participants who want to experience Belgian culture in different parts of the country.

These excursions are optional and not included in the registration fees.

GHENT

Ghent offers a quirky, fascinating cultural cocktail brimming with rich history, culture and a trendy city vibe. It is a chilled-out city where anything goes: a city break on a human scale. Ghent’s city center is a pedestrian area that is like a museum to early Flemish architecture and a testament to the city’s medieval might. Impressive Gothic sites, such as dramatic St. Bavo’s Cathedral and Ghent Belfry.

During this one-day excursion, you will discover the Castle of the Counts, the only remaining fortress with a moat and largely intact defence system in Flanders. Your guide will walk you through the historical centre and you will taste a variety of local specialities such as the cuberdon Mastel. You will end up the day with a romantic cruise of 40 minutes along the River Leie waterfront departing from the medieval port of Graslei.

NAMUR

Namur is the capital city of the Wallonia region of Belgium. At the confluence of the Meuse and Sambre rivers is the Citadel, a medieval fortress with 7km of underground passages, gardens, views and a golden statue of a giant turtle.

You will discover this impressive rocky spur fortress, an exceptional heritage which has conserved traces of each period of its 2000-year-old history. After a walk through the city and climbing up to the Citadel, you will relax and enjoy a 50-minute boat tour along the river.

ANTWERP

Antwerp is a metropolis on a human scale. Large but navigable. Building on its history, but permanently innovative. Full of diversity, but always recognisable.

During this one-day excursion you will discover the diamond district renown for the craft of gold, diamond and jewels since the 16th century. You will visit the DIVA Museum and be guided through six rooms with six stories: The Wunderkammer, where you will admire a collection of curiosities, objects of every corner from the globe, The Atelier where you will learn the art of diamond-cutting and silversmithing through interactive screen displays, you will be taken inside the world of international diamond trading and discover many other experiences. The eclectic Cathedral of Our Lady as well as the House of the Flemish Baroque Master Rubens will be part of  your journey!
